Studies suggest that happy people have more children. But what does it mean being happy individually and among couples in partnership, family, and work? To what extent is life satisfaction and mental health affected by work-life balance and gender equality? How can policies support families to realize their childbearing desires and intentions? As fertility levels remain low – even decreasing - in Europe, and gender equality improves rather slowly in many places, the focus will be on recent research evidence on the relationship between well-being and childbearing, and critically discuss sustainable policy options for European countries, also in light of the COVID pandemic, which may affect fertility also through several channels - including resilience and mental well-being.
