The presentation considers two types of compensation that play key roles in intergenerational attainment. The first type is compensatory advantage, referring to a situation where high socioeconomic status parents compensate for the lacking or lost resources of their children in order to guarantee children’s success in attainment. The second type is the compensation of the lacking immediate family resources. The research examples considered cover parental death and separation, as well the compensation with the resources of aunts, uncles and grandparents. Finally, the differences in compensation by different welfare institutions are discussed.
